FAQ

What is the DART?
DART stands for Downtown Adventure Race Topeka. This multi-leg race will have teams participating in a variety of FUN challenges and tasks that will test both physical and mental skills. All legs of the race will take place in downtown Topeka.

When is the DART?
The DART will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2019 @ 8:00 a.m. The DARTini begins at 9:00 a.m. with registration and team setup opening at 7:00 a.m.

How much does it cost to participate and what do I get for my registration fee?
Registration for the DART is $40 per individual before August 1, 2019 and $50 after. Each participant will receive an official DART t-shirt, swag bag and race number.

Proceeds from the DART go to support the many programs and services offered at Let’s Help; including their hot lunch program, emergency utility payment program, GED classes and job readiness training. For more information about Let’s Help, please visit    letshelpinc.org or call 785-234-6208.

How many people can I have on my team?
A maximum of six people can be on a team. The minimum number of team members is three. Teams must have three people on the course at all times. Some legs won’t give you the token of success unless your three person team is present.

Is there a limit to the number of teams that can participate?
Yes. Participation will be limited to the first 50 teams to register, so sign up today!

Can minors participate in the race?
Yes, but anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Do I have to be an “athlete” to participate?
Absolutely not! Our goal is for you to have a fun and memorable day downtown. While all transportation between tasks will be on foot, it is up to you whether you walk, jog, or run. You may want to have one team member that can run, however, as there will be a point where this ability will come in quite handy. The average distance traveled on race day is seven miles, although that is not in one stretch.

How can teams stand out from one another?
We’re glad you asked! Costumes, themes, and memorable team names are all encouraged. Keep in mind that the weather in late August could be very hot or somewhat mild, so plan your “bling” appropriately. There will be a “Best Team Costume” award granted to the most creative and original team garb as judged by the DART committee.

What exactly will teams do on the race?
Well, we can’t go into specifics, because the legs/tasks are TOP SECRET. In general, you will receive clues that may take you to specific locations, businesses, etc. downtown. Perhaps you’ll have a puzzle to solve or a unique task to accomplish. Upon completion of each leg, teams will return to a centralized Transition Area (TA) to receive their next clue.

What “tools” can we use on the race?
First, teams must have a camera. Many cell phones come equipped with a camera, but if yours does not, be sure to bring a digital camera. All other “tools” on your smart phone are legal as well. It is not likely you’d need GPS or internet access, but feel free to use these options if you’d like. A notepad and pen could come in handy at certain times, too.

How long will the DART take to complete?
That depends on how fast your team is. We estimate that it will take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours to finish, but actual times may differ. Plan on spending the day downtown…and plan on lots of laughs and fun as well! We encourage teams join in the after party. It provides a great venue to talk to other teams about the experience and relive your fun moments of the day.

Where do we keep our stuff during the race?
Each team will be allotted a stall/spot at the Transition Area (TA), approximately 10’ x 10’. You may want to bring bag chairs for your comfort or even a shade tent/canopy. The TA will be clearly marked with barricades, but you will not want to leave any valuables unattended.

Will there be prizes?
Absolutely! In addition to having “bragging rights” for completing the DART, there will be prizes awarded not only to the top finishers, but also to other teams that display exemplary character and determination during the race (at the sole discretion of the DART committee, of course)!

Is there a post-race event?
After the race we encourage teams to stay around the transition area and visit about their experiences or join the after party.
